Jon Danforth: Pursuing the Muse
Bringing us to a natural state
Welcome back to Pursuing the Muse! I am thrilled to be talking to a very special returning guest, Dallas-based musician Jon Danforth. We have a major milestone to celebrate: Jon’s third full-length LP, Natural State, is officially hot off the press. Having been a fan since his first record, I can say with certainty that this is his best work yet—a rootsy, intentional collection of songs that invites the listener to slow down and take the “scenic route” through art.
Jon is an Arkansas native who spent twenty-five years in the “Natural State” before moving to Dallas, and this new project serves as a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to those roots. Over a six-year songwriting journey, he has evolved his indie-folk sound by incorporating the banjo and fiddle for the first time, creating a record that is part personal documentation and part nature-filled ode to his home state. Jon manages to balance the demands of suburban life and a career with a deep commitment to hunting for the next great song, always aiming to capture the personal universal in his lyrics.
In this episode, we dive into the stories behind the tracks that make this album so special. You won’t want to miss the details on the romantic significance of a “weed bouquet,” the chilling true event that inspired the record’s darkest turn, and the simple sensory experience involving breakfast and birdsong that sparked his lead single. We even find time to discuss the history of Arkansas gangsters and share some mutual appreciation for the early days of the internet. Join us for a journey through the Natural State!
